Unwritten Futures: Ending Child Marriages in Rural Zimbabwe

In the heart of rural Zimbabwe, child marriages are a silent thief of futures. Here, amidst the rolling landscapes and close-knit communities, young girls often find their dreams bubbled up by age-old traditions and economic hardships. But change is not just possible; it is imperative. The reality is that in these rural areas, about 1 in 3 girls marry before their 16th birthday. These early marriages lead to a host of issues, from health complications to halted education and cycles of poverty. The impact is profound, both on the girls and the community at large. The question remains, "How can we tackle this problem at hand?"  Let's educate them first, ensuring that girls stay in school is crucial. Programs that make education accessible and affordable, even in the most remote villages, are vital. Community-based schooling initiatives and mobile classrooms can bring education to every doorstep.   Zimbabwe is popularly known for its politics. However, some have seen Zimbabwe as a country that makes dreams come true. ‘A Country of Honey and Milk’, some prefer to call it. The Chinese are extracting ores from our country and are gurus in the plastic products industry, the Indians and Pakistanis have mastered the fabric business, the Zambians and Malawians are taking over the food retail and clothes sector.   The 2024 Paris Olympics is a glimpse of hope that Zimbabwean Sports  can be revived. We have been represented well by the Zimbabwean Olympics Team. They all showed us that against all odds we can chill with the big boys. fig 1.1  Makanakaishe Charamba & Tapiwanashe Makarawu Allow me to introduce the above two Zimbabwean youths in the photo that have managed to raise the Zimbabwe's flag up high. They are the definition of hard work and also the resurrection of Zimbabwean sports. As a student who was once into athletics and participated in High school sports competitions, I'm proud to say that what I have seen and experienced, I hope our Ministry of Sports would venture into it and see how the youth can put our name back at the top. What I have noticed at high ranked schools in Zimbabwe, they focus on embracing the student's talent.
